Set up Slack

For your Slack integration, you'll need a Slack channel and a Slack app with an incoming webhook. Note that someone else can add the Slack integration to a Lightup workspace where they have sufficient permissions, if they have the webhook URL and Slack channel.

Prepare a Slack channel

You'll need to be a channel manager of the Slack channel that will receive notifications coming from Lightup.

  1. Do one of the following:
    • If you already have a suitable channel available in your Slack workspace, select it in the left nav.
    • To create a new channel, on the Home tab of your Slack workspace, at the bottom of the channel list in the left nav, select + Add channels > Create a new channel, give the channel a name, and then set its Visibility.
  2. At the top of the channel, select the drop-down arrow to open the channel details.
  3. Make any changes and add details as needed on the About tab and the Members tab.

Prepare a Slack app

You might already have a suitable Slack app available in your Slack workspace— if so you can skip ahead to Create an incoming webhook.

  1. Create a new Slack app.
  2. The rest of the process depends on your preferences. Follow the prompts to complete creation of your app.

Create an incoming webhook

  1. In the left nav of your app's home page, under Features select Incoming webhooks.

  2. Set Activate incoming webhooks to On.

  3. Scroll down, and at the bottom select Add New Webhook to Workspace.

  4. Select a channel, then select Allow.

  5. Your new webhook appears in the list of webhooks. You might want to save the webhook's URL and the Slack channel to provide for people who want to add this app to a Lightup workspace— both values are needed to add a Slack alerting channel.

Add a Slack alerting channel

You'll need values for URL and Slack Channel to complete this procedure. If someone else prepared Slack, you'll need to get the values from them.

  1. Select the workspace where you want to add an integration, and then select Integrations on the left panel
  2. Select Create Integration +.
  3. Choose Slack.
  4. In the Add Slack integration dialog, enter a value for Name - this becomes the Title of the integration when it's listed in the main Lightup form.
  5. URL is for your incoming webhook, and should look something like this:
https://hooks.slack.com/services/T00000000/B00000000/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Enter the value you noted when you created the Slack webhook.
  6. Slack channel is where notifications will post. Enter the channel you used when you created the Slack webhook.
  7. Be sure to set your time zone.
  8. Under Post Alerts to this channel, select the frequency at which the channel will receive new alerts. All posts happen at the beginning of the period indicated by the frequency and cover alerts in the previous period; for example, an hourly post is a digest of all alerts in the preceding hour.
  9. Use the toggles to choose whether to post daily digests and send alerts for resolved incidents.
  10. Optionally, select Send test message to test the new channel.
  11. Select Add to finish.
